RCH Course: Prevention and Management of Allergic Reactions and Anaphylaxis
This course is approved under Ministerial Order 706 for Victorian Schools ref: 5.5.3; also approved by ACECQA for Children's Services
The Department of Allergy and Immunology is able to deliver training in Management and Prevention of Allergy and Anaphylaxis as outlined in the Ministerial Order 706 (5.5.3) a course in anaphylaxis management endorsed and delivered by a tertiary level specialist allergy service within a tertiary level academic teaching hospital, that includes a competency check in the administration of an adrenaline autoinjector."
This course meets the requirements of the Department of Education and Training (DET) for staff working in Victorian schools

Content overview
- Identify individuals at risk of allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
- Develop individual allergy & anaphylaxis management plans
- Implement strategies to prevent allergic and anaphylaxis reactions
- Develop and implement a communication plan
- Assess the situation in relation physical hazards according with first aid principles and procedures
- Follow the casualty's individual ASCIA Allergy/Anaphylaxis action plan for anaphylaxis
- Provide appropriate first aid treatment for allergy & anaphylaxis
- Administration of adrenaline injector device/s and appropriate first aid
- Appropriate emergency assistance is requested
- Reassure the casualty
- Casualty's condition is monitored
- Communicate details of the incident
- Documentation is completed relating to the situations and established procedures
- Practical assessment in competency in the administration of an adrenaline injector device/s

- School teachers and other school staff (only delivered at RCH as per MO 706)
- Children's Services staff including family day care & OSHC staff - (delivered at RCH or at service by negotiation)
- School nurses
- Health professionals
- Staff providing catering for children
Assessment
To achieve a satisfactory result for this course, participants are required to complete assessment tasks during the session on, adrenaline autoinjector (EpiPen/®/AnaPen®) administration, a multi choice questionnaire and a risk assessment activity including an individual risk management plan.

Issuing of Certificates
A Certificate of Completion will be issued on successful completion of the course and assessment tasks. This course is valid for 3 years. This program is not a nationally accredited course; however, it fulfills the requirements of the Ministerial Order 706: Anaphylaxis Management for all Schools in Victoria and is approved by ACECQA for Children's Services (Nationally).

The first step is the completion of
the ASCIA Anaphylaxis Community Course
by the adults who will be part of the family session -refer to the link below:

This course has been released on the 13/1/2021 (revised
in October 2021) and is designed to be undertaken by the broader community such
as parents, friends, carers or patients themselves, sporting clubs, playgroups
and workplaces.
Once the course has been completed, please email us at the Anaphylaxis Advice Line
with the details of your specific needs for your one-hour Family Education session which we will schedule via
Zoom at a mutually convenient time.

- General information on allergies including signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis
- First Aid Management of anaphylaxis
- Demonstration and hands on practice with adrenaline injector devices
- How to manage your child's allergies on a day-to-day basis
